BLOKOWISKO

Such consistent and carefully rendered typography is not typical even for apartment block house districts.
This is a quiet neighbourhood with few passers-by which might’ve given more time to finish off the artwork.

DIREcCION DE AGUAS

This was my favourite wall inscription from the times when I used to live in Lavapiés quite near this place.
I smile every time I look at the little ‘c’ probably added only after the mistake in the word ‘dirección’ was noticed.
And what an ingenuous typographic solution!

VALOT

When and why someone taped the word “LIGHTS” on this old ladder lying around somewhere
on Mustikkamaa, Helsinki will remain a mystery.
We are left with these quite expressive and frank letters made with straight, overlapping lines.

PROHIBIDO FIJAR CARTELES

“Hanging Posters Forbidden” in three fittingly eroded variations.
Looks like some posters have been actually scraped off the letters.
And what style of letters! Pay particular attention to the space game style ‘B’s and ‘D’s.
The openings in the closed letter shapes of the first two examples suggest stencil technique.
Perhaps with paint applied with a roller. Looks like the last one was added later by felt pen.

RULLAPORTAAT

Seldom as it may sometimes seem Helsinki’s underground does offer some typographic delights
from time to time. Here an improvised sign indicating the way towards the escalator.

RÉQUIEM

This is my romantic Christmas contribution.
I don’t know what it originally looked like but in its current state one cannot deny credit
to those trying to keep the walls clean. Anyways in this particular case…

Työmaa-alue pääsy kielletty

Another Finnish construction site sign. This time featuring five funky fingers of an alien hand.
Or has this something to do with hair?

BAILEN – MADRID

Somewhere on the road between Madrid and Bailén…
Without doubt a grassroots initiative has spawned this impressive road sign nearby a buzy roadside inn.
I asked the driver to slow down and thanks to him we can appreciate this robust use of light/dark shapes.

CARBONES – COALS

One of probably hundreds of custom made shop facades in downtown Madrid.
More such beautiful facades to come soon.

PICCADILLY CAFE (RIP)

The New Piccadilly Cafe in London is about to be closed as big chains take over the business.
This sign pretty much shows the amount of time it has been running and the effort put into it.
The particular marriage of different type styles and images reminds of the fact that this restaurant
dates back to the 50’s.
The photo was made by Ronald Hackston.
