VINTAGE HELSINKI SHOP

Ian Bourgeot of Arkadia showed these to me one day on a street near his bookshop. These are leftovers
of old letters saying MEAT and MILK in Finnish and Swedish above what used to be large shop vitrines.
They were made to last long but back then who would expect the advent of the omnipresent Alepa.

LIHAA – KÖTT – MAITOA – MJÖLK

CONTAINER TYPE

Some examples of deteriorating container type from Helsinki’s industrial shores. Both containers have been
repainted but with different intentions. In one the type was to be covered in the other – preserved.

I only had a tiny digi camera with me and on top of than one that’s rapidly ageing. The photos show
clear signs of matrix deterioration so you better go and see this one yourself,
it’s right here: N 60° 11.631 E 024° 57.188

To continue the subject of graveyard typography here are a couple of numbers on a post marking administrative borders
on one of Helsinki’s cemeteries. I particularly like how the two lines of the “2” have blended forming a quite new shape
but still maintaining legibility to a certain degree.

PET CEMETERY #5

Another couple of finds from Helsinki’s pet cemetery – this time to the memory of Petronella (wonderful pink plate)
and two or three cats (there are three figures of cats but only two sets of dates – perhaps the third one is still on the way?).

JALANKULKU

On construction sites in densely populated urban areas it often results necessary to communicate certain
practical things to the casual passer-by. In most cases it will be an indication of the way as you can see
below (pedestrian passage) or here (escalator). Some of the signs are manufactured standards but it gets
more interesting when the construction site workers are obliged to produce some themselves.

PET CEMETERY #4 (AROMI & PAMI)

These are not exactly from the graveyard itself but from a gravestone dump on the other side of the fence.
Most probably the loving memory of Aromi and others faded with time and eventually was not enough
to pay the accommodation bill. This is so to say a gravestone graveyard.

DENTIST

An ingeniously graphical advertisement in Helsinki. All that is said with words is “3rd floor” – the rest is obvious.
