VERULAM

Dignified letters from the centre of old London which look like some derivative of Bodoni.
Considering the differences in letter width the typeface might be custom made.

BOYD PIANOS

The UK and especially London is still full of old, industrial age, mural advertisements (so is North America).
Below is one of many I spotted while walking down London’s Stoke Newington High Street – a washed down
and eroded piano dealer ad that could easily date back at least several decades.

WHERE?

Thanks to Suzy Pym now, after centuries of searching, we finally know where.
See her photo below for the answer to one of the principal questions. The state of the message and
the wall around it tells us is had been there for quite some time already just waiting to be discovered.

Lovell’s Wharf from Thames Path

Here’s another one from the old, industrial sites of London, photographed by Toronto Addick.
It can probably still be found at the end of Pelton Road, Greenwich although housing development
may be on its way in these areas. In so far typography is concerned I love these letters for their
straightforward power and drive towards increased legibility – of course slightly consumed by time.

All Saints Works

Here’s a photo made by Simon K who did the right thing sacrificing a moment of his attention and time
to capture this old London advertisement. I caught a special sympathy for this one. Something about
the combination of the old, industrial environment and the graceful touch of time on the letters.

update 17.10.: As Simon corrected it is not London but Sudbury, Suffolk.

PICCADILLY CAFE (RIP)

The New Piccadilly Cafe in London is about to be closed as big chains take over the business.
This sign pretty much shows the amount of time it has been running and the effort put into it.
The particular marriage of different type styles and images reminds of the fact that this restaurant
dates back to the 50’s.
The photo was made by Ronald Hackston.
